Not the actual chipmunk! |
Chimmie discovered a nest of chipmunks in our backyard this afternoon! Linda first thought they were bunnies because she could only see the tops of their little heads. She was afraid he was going to eat them up, so she made him come in the house. After getting closer, she could see the three little guys wiggling around were not bunnies at all. Before the lawn was cut, the grass under the deck must have been 3 feet tall, so they were well hidden. Now they are exposed to the world and one crazy dog!! What to do??? Linda got a bunch of grass, ivy and weeds and covered them up. But before she put the grass down, she put a bunch of lettuce leaves on them just in case they were hungry. Then, she pulled the igloo dog house top over them so they would be sheltered from the sun, rain and Chimmie. (He is afraid of the dog house, so it should keep them safe.) She is going to google what chipmunks eat so she can keep feeding them. It might require a trip back to the pet store for chipmunk food. UPDATE: Chipmunks eat nuts, worms and insects. Linda had some nuts, pumpkin seeds, and sunflower seeds so she sprinkled it around the pups (that is what baby chips are called.) Their eyes are open and they have lots of fur, so we hope they are old enough to be able to eat the food if the Mommy does not come back. p.s Anyone who says they are rodents and should be killed will not be my friend.
